about

This song started as an improv called Poor Ass Musician's Blues. The opening line is an original part of the improv, something Marcus used to do often, dubbing it Freestyle Blues. After additional lyrics were made for the studio recording, the suggestion was made to alter the structure of the song slightly to make it more of a unique blues tune. The entire song is essentially a true story from the guitars to the family members, and the closing trombone call (Revelry) is a reference to a time when Marcus' dad woke him and his brother up with his horn on a Sunday morning when they didn't want to get out of bed. Blues is history. And this song is no less. It embodies the struggles and triumphs of indie musicians everywhere and honors the history of The Blues in Southwest Virginia.

lyrics

Roanoke, Virginia—Blue Ridge Mountains born and raised
Roanoke, Virginia—Blue Ridge Mountains born and raised
Since the tender age of 19
I've been playing music most my days

Papa played the juice harp
And Grandma used to stomp and clap her hands
Mama plays piano, and Daddy—he's a trombone man
So when my brother picked up the guitar
I said I gotta do what I can

So he went down to the pawn shop
Bought me my first guitar
It was a four string piece of junk
But I played it 'til it died
I played a couple notes on that thing
And it got me going strong
Now when I get to singing
People tend to sing along

But it don't mean I'm a rock star
Just because I lit the fuse
I'm just out here jammin'
To these Low Down Musician Blues

So I bought my first five string
And it promptly got broke
Bought my second five string guitar
And that one got stole
Sometimes I can't win for losing
But I wanna tell you the truth
I'm not trying to stop playing music
'Til the Lord comes back to clean his footstool

Oh, just because nobody's listening
That doesn't mean we ain't out here paying dues
In fact we're kind of enjoying
These Low Down Musican Blues
